The officials of Caroline County had been working on their design ideas and funding for a new Visitor Center for almost 15 years. A beautiful location was selected in Denton on the Choptank River. They were able to get funding and decided to build it in 2016.
Design Resources was hired as part of a design/build team with general contractor Harper Sons of Easton, to work with the County to finalize their design and provide a set of code compliant construction plans. Since the location was prone to tidal flooding, the building was elevated on wood piling with a structural timber deck. This presented a challenge for handicap accessibility. It provides a large amount of outdoor seating for the public to enjoy the river and marsh scenery along with a large indoor Exhibition Hall. The Visitor Center uses the local rural vernacular as a basis for design.
